Beschreibung

Locality: Imilchil area, Midelt Province, Drâa-Tafilalet Region, Morocco

Prehnite has the formula Ca2Al2Si3O10(OH)2, a hardness of 6 to 6.5 and a vitreous, weakly pearly lustre. It forms as a secondary or hydrothermal mineral in veins and cavities in dark volcanic rocks and is a typical product of low-grade metamorphism, often with datolite, calcite, epidote and native copper.

This one of a kind Prehnite specimen from Morocco features a dense, rough cluster of pale green to grey-green crystals covering a darker matrix. The crystals range from short, blocky growths to rounded and fan-like formations, with visible striations and stepped surfaces throughout. Cream-coloured tips and small yellowish areas add variation across the piece, while the crowded crystal growth gives it a heavily textured, natural appearance from every angle.

Prehnite was named in 1788 by the German mineralogist Abraham Gottlieb Werner in honour of Colonel Hendrik von Prehn (1733–1785), the Cape-born commander of the Dutch garrison at the Cape of Good Hope, who is credited with bringing the first specimens to Europe. It is often cited as the first mineral named after a person. It commonly forms in cavities, veins, and altered volcanic rocks, often alongside minerals such as epidote, calcite and quartz. Moroccan Prehnite specimens are appreciated for their earthy green tones and unusual clustered habits, ranging from smooth botryoidal masses to granular and crystalline coatings.

In crystal traditions, prehnite is associated with calm, intuition and gentle renewal.
