Locality: Maevarano Formation, Mahajanga Basin, Boeny Region, northwestern Madagascar
Era: Late Cretaceous
Geological Age: 66–72 mya
Description: This one of a kind Sauropod hip bone sphere from northwestern Madagascar has a polished surface with strong visible bone texture throughout. The pattern shows cream, tan, grey, brown, and dark mineral-filled cells, with larger open bone structures on some sides and tighter webbing on others. Its rounded shape makes the fossil structure easy to view from every angle, and the quarter in the photos shows it is a solid display-size piece.
Sauropods were massive long-necked dinosaurs, and hip bone came from one of the heavy load-bearing parts of the skeleton. During fossilization, minerals slowly moved through the porous bone and preserved the internal structure, turning the original biological material into stone while keeping the natural bone pattern visible.
