Beschreibung

Locality: Kem Kem Group, south-eastern Morocco

Era: Mesozoic

Geological Age: Late Cretaceous (Cenomanian), about 100 to 95 million years ago

Description: Spinosaurus has one of the strangest histories in palaeontology. The German palaeontologist Ernst Stromer named it in 1915 from bones collected in Egypt's Bahariya Formation in 1912. Those original fossils were kept in Munich and were destroyed when Allied bombers hit the city on the night of 24–25 April 1944, leaving only Stromer's drawings and descriptions.

For decades the animal was known mostly from those drawings and from isolated teeth. In 2014 Nizar Ibrahim and colleagues described a new partial skeleton from the Kem Kem beds of southeastern Morocco. It gave fresh evidence that Spinosaurus spent much of its life in and around water. Its long, conical teeth, like this one, are among the most common fossils from the Kem Kem.

Spinosaurus is a genus of theropod dinosaur that lived during the early Late Cretaceous (Cenomanian). Spinosaurus is one of the largest known carnivorous dinosaurs, estimated at about 14 to 15 m (46 to 49 ft) long. It had a long, crocodile-like snout, conical teeth suited for catching fish, and a large sail-like structure on its back formed by elongated neural spines. Spinosaurus lived in a semi-aquatic environment, likely spending time in both water and on land. Fossils have been found in what is now North Africa. Primarily piscivorous (fish-eating), Spinosaurus likely hunted aquatic prey, using its adaptations to catch fish in rivers and lakes.
