Locality: Wagholi Quarries, Wagholi, Pune District, Pune Division, Maharashtra, India
Description: Cavansite was unknown until 1960, when collectors found a bright blue mineral in a road cut near Owyhee Dam in eastern Oregon. It was named in 1973, and the name is built from its ingredients: calcium, vanadium and silicon. The original Oregon crystals were tiny.
Late in 1973, small blue crystals turned up in a dealer's stock in Pune, India. Within a year cavansite had been found in a basalt quarry at the village of Wagholi near Pune, and the Wagholi quarries soon produced far larger and finer crystals than Oregon ever had. They remain the world's classic source.
The Wagholi crystals grow in gas cavities in the lava flows of the Deccan Traps, one of the largest volcanic provinces on Earth. Vanadium gives cavansite its vivid blue colour.
These pieces are brilliant blue radiating rosettes on matrix.
In crystal traditions, cavansite is associated with intuition and dream work.
