Era: Paleozoic and Triassic
Geographic Age: 200 mya - 500 mya
The ancestor to the squid, Orthoceras shells range in length from a few inches to over six feet.
Their middle body chamber is transversely constricted, and that would help them crawl across the ocean floor and swim. Orthoceras could float by filling chambers of their shells with air and they used jet propulsion by squirting water to move.
The rock containing them is quarried from the Atlas Mountains of Morocco and polished for decorative purposes with the fossil visible on the surface.
