Nephrite is one of the two minerals sold as jade. It is a tough, tightly interlocking mass of fibrous tremolite-actinolite amphibole crystals, which gives it exceptional toughness for its hardness. British Columbia is one of the world's major sources of nephrite, and jade is the official gemstone of British Columbia.
In crystal traditions, jade is often associated with harmony, good fortune and protection. These associations come from spiritual and folk traditions rather than scientifically established properties.
