Description: This one-of-a-kind solid Australian opal is a 5.06 carat freeform boulder opal cabochon, a smooth, gently domed stone with an irregular outline. A band of blue and green play of colour runs across its face, over a dark, rough-textured natural ironstone back. It is a solid boulder opal from Queensland, not a doublet or triplet, and it is natural and untreated.
Opal is a hydrated form of silica that forms when silica-rich water settles into cracks and cavities and slowly hardens. Precious opal shows play of colour, flashes of spectral colour produced as light diffracts through tiny, regularly stacked silica spheres. Opal is softer than quartz and holds some water, so it should be protected from knocks, sudden temperature changes and harsh chemicals.
In crystal traditions, opal is often associated with creativity, emotional expression and inspiration. These associations come from spiritual and folk traditions rather than scientifically established properties.
