Description: Sawfish are a group of cartilaginous fish belonging to the family Pristidae. They are characterized by their long, flat snouts lined with sharp, tooth-like structures, giving them the appearance of a saw. Sawfish have a long evolutionary history, with fossils dating back to the Cretaceous period. Fossilized sawfish spines found in Moroccan localities are primarily from the Cretaceous (100 to 66 million years ago) and Paleogene (66 to 23 million years ago) periods.

Some ancient sawfish species were quite large, similar in size to the largest modern species, which can reach lengths of up to 7 meters (23 feet). Like their modern relatives, ancient sawfish lived in both marine and freshwater environments. Fossils have been found in a variety of sedimentary deposits, indicating they inhabited coastal regions, river systems, and estuaries. Ancient sawfish survived several mass extinction events, including the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) extinction that wiped out the dinosaurs. Their ability to thrive in various environments likely contributed to their survival. The modern sawfish species we see today are the descendants of these ancient creatures, carrying forward many of their ancestral traits and adaptations.
