Description: Serpentine isn't a single mineral, it’s an entire group of hydrated magnesium phyllosilicates. Serpentine forms primarily in environments rich in ultramafic rocks, particularly in tectonic settings where oceanic crust is subducted or obducted onto continental landmasses. It results from serpentinization, a chemical reaction where peridotite or pyroxene-rich rocks interact with water, altering olivine and pyroxene into serpentine.
