Era: Cenozoic, Quaternary Period
Geological Age: Pleistocene, about 460,000-14,000 years ago

The woolly rhinoceros (Coelodonta antiquitatis) was a cold-adapted plant-eater that lived across northern Eurasia during the Late Pleistocene. It died out about 14,000 years ago.

A 2020 study in Current Biology, led by Edana Lord, sequenced a complete nuclear genome from a woolly rhino about 18,500 years old, along with 14 mitochondrial genomes. It found no sign of inbreeding or falling genetic diversity: the population seems to have stayed steady for more than 13,000 years after people arrived. The final decline may have been sudden, driven mostly by rapid warming during the Bølling–Allerød warm period near the end of the last ice age. The genome also showed adaptations to arctic cold, similar to those of the woolly mammoth.

This one of a kind woolly rhino tooth fossil specimen has a dark brown to black mineralized surface with visible enamel ridges, natural cracking, and worn chewing surfaces. The open channels and layered tooth structure show the heavy grinding form typical of large grazing mammals.

Woolly rhinoceroses (Coelodonta antiquitatis) lived across Ice Age Europe and northern Asia during the Pleistocene and were built for cold steppe environments. They never reached North America.

Spiritually, rhino fossils are often associated with endurance, protection, strength, and ancient survival. This piece carries the symbolism of persistence through harsh environments and the grounded power of an animal built to withstand a difficult world.
