Description

Locality: Paris Basin, France

Era: Mesozoic
Geological Age: 66-252 Million Years Ago

Description: This one of a kind Cenoceras nautiloid fossil specimen from France features a large, thick shell preserved in pale cream, tan and warm yellow-brown limestone. The fossil has a broad, rounded coil with a recessed central whorl and a substantial outer body chamber. Fine, tightly folded suture patterns cover much of the surface, giving the shell a detailed, maze-like texture. One end is incomplete and exposes a flat broken section of the limestone-filled interior, while the underside contains a dense mix of small shell fragments and other marine fossil material.

Cenoceras is a nautiloid, not an ammonite. Nautiloids are marine cephalopods related to modern squid, octopus and cuttlefish, and they belong to the same group as the living nautilus. Their chambered shells helped control buoyancy as they moved through ancient seas.

In traditional fossil folklore, fossil cephalopods like this nautiloid have been associated with cycles, longevity, protection and steady change. Their coiled shells are often used as natural symbols of growth and the passage of time. These are cultural and metaphysical associations rather than scientifically established properties.
