Description: These are assorted petrified woods from all over USA- mostly Western. They consist of opalized as well as agatized woods. All are browns, beiges, blacks, etc. Great lapidary material.
Petrified wood is a type of fossil. Wood buried in sediment or volcanic ash soaks up silica from groundwater. The silica coats and fills the cells, so the wood's structure is preserved in stone. The result is a beautiful, often colorful stone that retains the grain and texture of the original wood.
