Description
Locality: Black Petrified Forest, Chinle Formation, northeastern Arizona, U.S.A.
Description: The petrified wood from the Black Forest region of Arizona dates back to the Late Triassic period, approximately 200 to 225 million years ago. During this time, the area was covered by a lush forest that included trees such as ancient conifers.
Petrified wood is a type of fossil. Wood buried in sediment or volcanic ash soaks up silica from groundwater. The silica coats and fills the cells, so the wood's structure is preserved in stone. The result is a beautiful stone that retains the grain and texture of the original wood.
