Description: Black Tourmaline is the black variety of tourmaline, known mineralogically as schorl. It is a complex borosilicate mineral that commonly forms in igneous and metamorphic environments, especially in pegmatites, which are extremely coarse-grained igneous rocks that often produce large and well-formed crystals. Material from China can occur in sharply striated prismatic crystals, dense masses, or matrix specimens, and it is valued for its strong crystal habit, dark luster, and durable structure.
As a mineral specimen, Black Tourmaline is appreciated for both its geological character and its visual presence. Its black color is largely caused by iron-rich chemistry, and its long vertical striations are one of the easiest ways to recognize it. Chinese material has been widely collected for mineral displays, teaching collections, and decorative use because it offers a bold, classic example of tourmaline’s crystal form.
Metaphysically, Black Tourmaline is commonly associated with grounding, energetic protection, and stability. Many people use it as a stone for creating boundaries, reducing unwanted energy, and encouraging a stronger sense of calm and control during stressful periods.
