Description: These well preserved fossil ferns also known as Pecopteris come from the Carbondale Formation, which is located in Coal City, Illinois.
Pecopteris are an extinct family of seed ferns.  which simply means that they reproduce by dropping seeds rather than spores as with many modern ferns. These fossils are quite detailed and are preserved within siderite (iron carbonate) nodules. Their preservation is believed to have started with a catastrophic flood event. The deposition of river-borne silt and clay, brought on by upland erosion created the perfect conditions for their long lasting impressions.

These fossilized fern impressions are captured within a clay nodule that act as their host rock or matrix. when closed they appear to be a lump of hardened clay, but once opened they revel a beautiful impression of an ancient seed fern. They make a wonderful addition to any fossil collection and can be displayed side by side to double your pleasure.
