Description

Locality: Hanford Site area, Benton County, Washington, U.S.A.

Description: Hanford glass is leaded shielding-window glass from a hot cell at the Hanford Site in Washington, U.S.A. Hot cells are heavily shielded rooms where workers handled radioactive materials remotely, watching through thick viewing windows built from layers of dense lead glass. This piece has yellowed over time from radiation exposure and its high lead content. It is a man-made industrial glass, not a natural mineral.
