Description

Locality: Southern North Sea (Doggerland), trawled by Dutch fishing boats, Netherlands

Era: Late Pleistocene
Geological Age: about 60,000 to 15,000 years ago (Late Pleistocene)

Description: These mammoth bone fragments were brought up from the floor of the southern North Sea by Dutch fishing boats. During the last ice age, sea level was so much lower that this area was dry land, part of a plain now called Doggerland that joined Britain to mainland Europe. Woolly mammoths, woolly rhinos, reindeer and other animals of the cold "mammoth steppe" roamed it.

As the ice melted, the sea rose and drowned Doggerland, and its bones were left on the sea floor. Since the 1960s, Dutch beam trawlers have hauled up many thousands of fossil bones in their nets, mostly around the Brown Bank, and landed them at ports such as IJmuiden. Radiocarbon dates place most of this material between about 60,000 and 15,000 years ago.

The Naturalis museum in Leiden now holds about 9,000 mammoth specimens, most of them from the North Sea.

Woolly mammoths were extinct relatives of today's elephants. They grazed mainly on grasses and other plants, and their long, curved tusks could reach about 4 m (13 ft).

Each fragment shows part of the dense outer wall of the bone and the porous, honeycomb-like inner bone.
