Description

Locality: Madagascar

Description: Ocean Jasper is an orbicular stone from the northwestern coast of Madagascar. It is not strictly a jasper but a completely silicified rhyolite or tuff, in which chalcedony grew into round orbs. The deposit was located in October 1999 on the shoreline near the village of Marovato, where it could only be seen and collected at low tide. It was introduced at the Tucson gem show in 2000 and named for its seaside find and wave-like patterns. The first veins were worked out by 2006, and newer deposits have been found since.

In Crystal Lore: In crystal lore, ocean jasper is traditionally associated with joy, patience and kind, positive communication, and is sometimes called a stone of the sea. Some believe its orbs are a reminder that life moves in cycles, like the tides. It is linked with the heart, solar plexus and throat chakras and, in zodiac traditions, with Capricorn.
