Locality: Midway, British Columbia, Canada

Description: Ocean Picture Rock comes from the Picture Rock quarry near Midway, British Columbia. It is chalcedony, a fine-grained form of quartz, that formed in epithermal veins where hot, silica-rich water filled fractures in altered serpentinite and feldspar porphyry. The veins are banded in white, grey, light blue and blue-green, and the bands and inclusions often look like small landscapes or seascapes.

It is sometimes sold as sea jasper, but it is a different stone. Each piece is tumbled to a smooth polish, and the pattern and colour vary from piece to piece.
