Description
Mined from: Khoroshiv Raion (Volodarsk-Volynskii), Zhytomyr Oblast, Ukraine
Description: These phenakite crystals come from the Volyn pegmatite field in northern Ukraine's Zhytomyr Oblast, around the town long known as Volodarsk-Volynskii. The district was renamed Khoroshiv in 2016, but collectors still use the old name. It is an old and famous locality, best known for huge "chamber" pegmatites whose open pockets have yielded giant heliodor beryl and topaz crystals.
The pegmatites form a belt about 22 km long and up to 1.5 km wide in granites of the Korosten complex, one of the largest bodies of its kind in the world. As the granite cooled, the last fluids, rich in rare elements such as beryllium, collected in pockets where crystals could grow freely.
Phenakite is a beryllium silicate, Be2SiO4. With the region's beryl and topaz taking centre stage, it has often been overlooked. A 2024 Journal of Gemmology study described faceted phenakite from this locality.
These are small natural phenakite crystals, sold from mini to XX-large.
In crystal traditions, phenakite is associated with the crown chakra.
