Oregon Sunstone is a copper-bearing feldspar that formed within ancient basaltic lava flows in southeastern Oregon. Copper incorporated into the feldspar is responsible for the distinctive yellow, peach, red, green, and copper-toned colours found in this material. The best-known deposits occur in the remote high desert around Rabbit Basin near Plush, Oregon, where there is no drinking water at the deposits and access has historically been difficult. Tiffany & Co. acquired claims in the area in the early 1900s and marketed some of the clear material as “Plush Diamonds,” but the venture never developed into a lasting large-scale operation. Oregon Sunstone mining remains closely tied to relatively small independent mines and cutters today.
