Description: This one-of-a-kind black agate is a 7.18 carat rectangle step cut. This black agate was dug by our own team on the Nicomen Plateau near Boston Bar, British Columbia, where black agate nodules weather out of volcanic rock. You can watch a dig at this site on our YouTube channel: Black Agate, Nicomen Plateau.
Agate is a variety of chalcedony, a quartz made of microscopic fibres. It forms when silica-rich groundwater seeps into gas pockets and cracks in volcanic rock long after the lava has cooled, depositing silica that slowly hardens into a dense, translucent stone. At 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, agate is tough enough for everyday jewelry.
In crystal traditions, agate is often associated with balance, calm and steadiness. These associations come from spiritual and folk traditions rather than scientifically established properties.
