Locality: Cavnic Mine, Maramureș County, Romania
Barite commonly forms well-shaped crystals, with more than 70 crystal forms recorded, usually as thin to thick tablets or prisms, and sometimes as crested or rosette-like clusters. It can be colourless, white, yellow, brown, grey or pale red, green or blue, and is often colour-zoned. It typically grows in low-temperature hydrothermal veins.
The Cavnic mine lies in Maramureș County in northwestern Romania, in the Baia Mare mining region. Its ore formed in a Neogene epithermal system hosted by volcanic rocks, with veins full of cavities and crystal-lined pockets that produced lead, zinc, copper, gold and silver ores. The Handbook of Mineralogy lists Cavnic, known historically as Kapnikbánya, among its notable localities for barite.
While the mine was working, Cavnic was the most productive source of mineral specimens in the Maramureș mining area, and pyrite is among the minerals most often found with its barite. After the mines closed and were sealed, the headframes were removed and the shafts flooded, so specimens from Cavnic are no longer being produced.
This one of a kind Blue Barite on Pyrite specimen from Romania displays a dense cluster of pale blue to silvery-grey Barite crystals growing over a sparkling metallic Pyrite matrix. The Barite crystals are well formed in tabular, blocky, and bladed habits, creating a layered, architectural look with strong natural depth. The soft icy-blue tones of the Barite contrast nicely against the darker brassy to steel-grey Pyrite base, giving the specimen a sharp and highly collectible appearance.
