Description
Locality: Pakistan
Description: Pakistan "onyx" is not true onyx, which is a banded chalcedony (quartz). It is banded travertine, also called onyx marble: calcium carbonate, mainly calcite with some aragonite, laid down layer by layer from mineral-rich hot springs. Pakistan's onyx comes mainly from the Chagai District of Balochistan, where the deposits are linked to young volcanic activity around the Koh-e-Sultan volcano. The green and brown bands are calcite. At around 3 on the Mohs scale it is much softer than quartz, so it takes a fine polish but scratches more easily.
In Crystal Lore: In crystal lore, onyx is traditionally associated with strength, self-discipline and steady growth. Some believe it encourages patience and follow-through on long-term goals. It is linked with the root chakra and, in zodiac traditions, with Leo and Capricorn. The banded stone has been a favourite for carvings and decorative pieces for a long time.
