Locality: Naica Mine, Saucillo Municipality, Chihuahua, Mexico
Selenite is the colourless crystalline variety of gypsum, hydrated calcium sulfate, CaSO4·2H2O. Gypsum is very soft, at 1.5 to 2 on the Mohs scale, with a pearly lustre on its perfect cleavage.
Since early in the twentieth century, new tunnels at the Naica mine have occasionally broken into caves lined with metre-sized selenite crystals, such as the Cueva de las Espadas, the Cave of Swords. In 2000, miners at the 290 m level found the Cueva de los Cristales, the Cave of the Crystals, whose selenite crystals reach 11 m long and 1 m thick, much larger than any gypsum crystal reported before. Research published in Geology in 2007 showed that they grew very slowly from warm, low-salinity water at about 54 °C.
This one of a kind selenite statement specimen from Mexico features a dramatic cluster of large, creamy-white to translucent crystal blades. The piece displays broad tabular formations with layered, striated surfaces and natural stepped edges, giving it a sculptural, architectural appearance. Its substantial size and bold intergrown structure make it an impressive display specimen, especially with the way the semi-translucent crystals catch and diffuse light.
Selenite is a crystalline variety of gypsum, a soft sulfate mineral known for its pearly to glassy luster and luminous appearance. The name “selenite” comes from the Greek word selene, meaning moon, a reference to its soft moon-like glow. Mexican selenite is especially appreciated by collectors for its large crystal formations, pale coloration, and naturally elegant growth patterns.
In crystal traditions, selenite is associated with clarity, cleansing and peace.
