Locality: Mibladen Mining District, Morocco
Mibladen lies about 25 km northeast of the town of Midelt, between Morocco's High Atlas and Middle Atlas mountains. Its lead deposit sits in Jurassic (Liassic) limestones and dolomites. Lead deposits there were first reported in 1907, and the Société des Mines d'Aouli worked the area from 1926, producing lead concentrate for export to France.
After the industrial lead mines closed, between about 1976 and 1980 depending on the account, former miners turned to digging mineral specimens. The trade grew through the 1980s and 1990s around Midelt, and Mibladen became one of the world's best-known sources of vanadinite.
Vanadinite is a lead chlorovanadate, Pb5(VO4)3Cl, and belongs to the apatite group. It typically grows as well-formed hexagonal prisms, in colours from red-orange and deep red to brownish red and yellow, with a subresinous to subadamantine lustre. It is soft, at 2.5 to 3 on the Mohs scale, and unusually heavy for its size, with a density of about 6.9.
This one of a kind Vanadinite specimen from Morocco features a landscape of the exciting, cubic-bipyramidal clusters typical of the mineral across a chocolaty drusy, making up the matric. The deep, contrasting golden brown catches the eye, while the intact, and clear-cut cubic crystal structures catch the light. The formations range in size, providing interest, and drawing attention to the dynamic silhouette cut by the shape of the specimen and punctuated by Vanadinite growth.
Originally discovered in Mexico in 1801, Vanadinite an uncommon, and curious mineral. It contains the previously undiscovered element, Vanadium, and is classified as a secondary mineral, occurring only as the result of chemical alterations to pre-existing materials, primarily the oxidation of lead rich minerals such as galena, or barite.
Vanadinite is sometimes called the "caffeine crystal" used to boost energy, mental focus, and creativity, often acting as a grounding tool for manifesting ideas into reality. It connects deeply with the root and sacral chakras, aiding in discipline, overcoming procrastination, and providing endurance for long projects.
