Vanadinite on Barite - Specimen

Locality: Mibladen Mining District, Morocco

Vanadinite is a lead chlorovanadate, Pb₅(VO₄)₃Cl, and belongs to the apatite group. It typically grows as well-formed hexagonal prisms, in colours from red-orange and deep red to brownish red and yellow, with a subresinous to subadamantine lustre. It is soft, at 2.5 to 3 on the Mohs scale, and unusually heavy for its size, with a density of about 6.9.

It forms as a secondary mineral in the oxidised zone of lead deposits, where vanadium leached from the surrounding rock combines with lead. The Handbook of Mineralogy lists Mibladen among the world's localities for large vanadinite crystals. It also notes that the original type specimen was lost at sea.

Barite is one of the minerals most often found with vanadinite in the oxidised zones of lead deposits. At Mibladen the lead ore itself occurs with barite in a stratiform deposit, so pale barite blades make a natural base for the red crystals.

Originally discovered in Mexico in 1801, Vanadinite is an uncommon and fascinating lead chlorovanadate mineral that contains vanadium. It is classified as a secondary mineral, forming in the oxidized zones of lead-rich deposits through the chemical alteration of pre-existing minerals. Moroccan Vanadinite is especially prized by collectors and is often found associated with Barite, which can occur as a pale matrix or as bladed crystalline material that highlights the rich color and luster of the Vanadinite.
