Description
Mined from: Argentina
Geological Age: Approximately 60-220 mya
Description: These eggshell fragments are from the eggs of a Saltasaurus, a genus of herbivorous titanosaurid sauropod dinosaur that lived within a broad geological range spanning approximately 60 to 220 million years ago. Saltasaurus itself is best known from the Late Cretaceous period, but these fragments reflect the rich and extended history of sauropod egg-laying across this timeframe. Saltasaurus was particularly fascinating among paleontologists because it was one of the first sauropods discovered with evidence of body armor—small, bony plates called osteoderms embedded in its skin, offering protection against predators. Despite being a sauropod, Saltasaurus was relatively small, estimated at 12 to 13 meters (about 39 to 43 feet) in length.
Saltasaurus eggs were spherical to slightly oval in shape, with diameters of about 12 to 14 centimeters (approximately 4.7 to 5.5 inches)—remarkably small compared to the massive adults they would hatch into. The eggshells are characterized by a multilayered structure, including a thick outer layer and a more porous inner layer. This robust design provided both protection for the developing embryos and sufficient gas exchange to sustain them. Discovered in Argentina’s Salta Province in the 1970s, these eggshell fragments offer a fascinating glimpse into the reproductive strategies of one of the last sauropods to roam the Earth.
