Description: Hackmanite is a rare and fascinating variety of the mineral sodalite. Like other sodalite verities, Hackmanite fluoresces a bright orange color when exposed to UV light. What makes Hackmanite special amongst fluorescent sodalites is the property of tenebrescence or reversible photochromism. This means that hackmanite changes color when exposed to different types of light. When exposed to ultraviolet light, Hackmanite changes from a pale color (such as pale purple or pink) to a deep violet or hot pink. This effect is reversed when the stone is left to sit in the dark - it will slowly change back to its original color over the course of several hours.
The combination of Tenebrescence and fluorescence in these specimens is truly a sight to behold - they start off pale purple, fluoresce safety orange under UV, and then, when the UV light is removed, they turn a deep dark purple in sharp contrast to their original color.
