Description
Origin: Mtoroshanga, Mashonaland West Province, Zimbabwe
Description: Mtorolite is a chromium-rich variety of chrysoprase, giving it a deeper, more saturated green compared to the nickel-colored chrysoprase from other regions. Rough material from Zimbabwe often shows strong, even coloration with a slightly waxy luster typical of chalcedony. Its color can range from rich forest green to darker, almost jade-like tones, making it especially desirable for lapidary work where consistent color is important.
This material forms in ultramafic rock environments, where chromium-bearing minerals are present. Through weathering and silica-rich fluid movement near the Earth’s surface, microcrystalline quartz precipitates and incorporates chromium into its structure. These deposits are typically found in lateritic soils and silcrete zones associated with altered serpentinite and other ultramafic rocks. Zimbabwe is one of the primary sources of mtorolite, producing rough that is well suited for cutting, carving, and cabbing.
Mtorolite is often associated with balance, renewal, and steady emotional grounding. Its deeper green tone gives it a more subdued and stabilizing presence compared to brighter chrysoprase, and many people are drawn to it for its calm, consistent energy. It’s commonly chosen by those looking for a stone that feels strong, steady, and visually rich.
