Description: This one of a kind oyster fossil specimen from California is made up of a thick cluster of overlapping shells in muted grey, tan and brown tones. The exterior has a rough, layered surface with broad shell plates, irregular growth lines and naturally broken edges that show how the oysters accumulated together. One side exposes a large concave shell interior with a pale cream centre, grey outer margin and visible mineral-filled cracks. The specimen is substantial in size and has a stable, low profile that works well as a natural-history display piece.

Fossil oysters are the preserved shells of marine bivalves that lived attached to hard surfaces or gathered in dense beds along ancient coastlines and shallow seas. Their shells were built mainly from calcium carbonate and could become buried in sediment after death. Over time, the surrounding material hardened and minerals entered the shell structure, preserving the layered growth patterns. California contains many marine sedimentary formations that record repeated periods when parts of the region were covered by coastal or offshore waters.
