Description
Locality: Mibladen mining district, Midelt Province, Drâa-Tafilalet Region, Morocco
Barite commonly forms well-shaped crystals, with more than 70 crystal forms recorded, usually as thin to thick tablets or prisms, and sometimes as crested or rosette-like clusters. It can be colourless, white, yellow, brown, grey or pale red, green or blue, and is often colour-zoned. It typically grows in low-temperature hydrothermal veins.
Mibladen lies about 25 km northeast of the town of Midelt, between Morocco's High Atlas and Middle Atlas mountains. Its deposit of barite and lead ore sits in Jurassic (Liassic) limestones and dolomites. Lead deposits there were first reported in 1907, and the Société des Mines d'Aouli worked the area from 1926.
After the industrial lead mines closed, between about 1976 and 1980 depending on the account, former miners turned to digging mineral specimens. Today miners around Mibladen still search for barite, as well as vanadinite and cerussite, and sell them through dealers in Midelt.
This one-of-a-kind Black Barite mineral specimen from Morocco showcases a dramatic cluster of bold, sharply formed crystals in deep charcoal, smoky black, and iron-stained brown tones. The specimen features thick tabular to bladed crystal growth with striking angular faces, reflective surfaces, and beautifully layered formations rising from a rugged natural matrix. Lighter translucent mineral accents and earthy inclusions create contrast throughout the piece, adding even more visual depth and collector appeal.
This is a standout display specimen with strong presence from every angle. The front reveals a dense arrangement of dark, sculptural crystal points and intergrown blades, while the reverse and base show the natural host matrix and associated mineralization. Its dark coloration, substantial crystal habit, and contrasting textures make it an especially eye-catching piece for mineral collectors, crystal enthusiasts, or anyone drawn to unusual natural formations.
Barite is a barium sulfate mineral known for its high specific gravity, varied crystal habits, and wide range of colors. Dark or black Barite specimens are especially desirable for their bold appearance and rarity compared with more common pale-toned forms. In crystal and metaphysical traditions, Black Barite is often associated with grounding, protection, focus, and energetic stability.
