Description
Locality: Paprok, Kamdesh District, Nuristan, Afghanistan
Description: Pollucite was first described in 1846 by the German mineralogist August Breithaupt, from a pegmatite on the island of Elba. He named it 'pollux', after one of the twin heroes of Greek myth. Its companion mineral from the same rock had been named 'castor', after the other twin. James Dwight Dana later changed the name to pollucite.
Pollucite is the main ore of cesium and forms in rare-element granite pegmatites. This piece comes from the Paprok pegmatite field in Kamdesh District, Nuristan, in the mountains of eastern Afghanistan, which is better known for its tourmaline. There pollucite occurs alongside elbaite tourmaline, spodumene, albite, quartz and lepidolite.
Pollucite is a rare cesium mineral primarily composed of cesium, aluminum, silicon, and oxygen, with water molecules included in its structure. It is a hydrated caesium aluminium silicate mineral.
The pollucite crystals in this lot have undergone natural etching, resulting in intricate surface patterns and textures. This is generally attributed to late-stage fluids dissolving parts of the crystal surface. Etching creates complex and often beautiful patterns on the crystal surfaces, which can include pits, grooves, and intricate geometric designs.
In crystal traditions, pollucite is associated with the crown chakra and with spiritual awareness.
