Description

Locality: Kopasz Hill, Tarcal, Zemplen Mts, Hungary

Description: This hyalite grew in the volcanic hills of Tokaj in northeastern Hungary, a region better known for its wine. The Tokaj Mountains were built by volcanic eruptions in the Miocene, mostly between about 13.1 and 11.6 million years ago, including large explosive eruptions and calderas.

At Kopasz Hill near Tarcal, an andesite quarry, hot silica-rich water later seeped through cracks and cavities in the dark volcanic rock. As it cooled, it left clear, glassy "dew-drop" coatings of hyalite, a water-clear form of opal (SiO₂·nH₂O). The hyalite often sits with aragonite or calcite.

The best trick hyalite has is invisible in daylight. Under shortwave ultraviolet light it glows bright green, a response attributed to traces of uranyl in the silica. Kopasz Hill hyalite is a well-known example in fluorescent mineral collections.

These pieces are raw hyalite still on their dark matrix.

In crystal traditions, hyalite opal is associated with clarity and calm.
