Moldavite is a rare Central European tektite, a natural impact glass formed when the Ries meteorite impact in southern Germany melted and ejected silica-rich material roughly 14.7 to 15 million years ago. Most Moldavite is found in the Czech Republic, but Mindat also notes minor occurrences in Germany’s Lausitz region, tying German Moldavite to the broader Central European strewn field. Unlike crystalline minerals, Moldavite is amorphous glass rather than a true crystal.
