Description

Locality: Northern British Columbia, Canada

Description: This Character Grade nephrite jade tumble is a piece of partially metamorphosed BC nephrite. Character Grade means the stone did not fully transform into jade: each piece ranges from about 10% nephrite up to 90% or even 100%, with the rest made up of the surrounding, less-transformed host rock. That mix gives every tumble its own blend of colour and texture, from deep and mottled greens to pale, speckled and white patches.

These pieces typically come from a section or the outer rim of a Northern British Columbia nephrite boulder, cut down and run through mass tumbling to a smooth polish. No two are alike, which makes them a favourite with collectors who enjoy seeing how jade forms in the ground.

Nephrite is a tough, interlocking mass of fibrous amphibole crystals, which makes it exceptionally durable and noticeably heavy in the hand. British Columbia is one of the world's major sources of green nephrite jade.

Jade has been valued for thousands of years in many cultures, including China, Central America and New Zealand, where it is traditionally seen as a symbol of beauty, good fortune and protection. These associations come from cultural traditions rather than scientifically established properties.
