Description
Locality: Tarazout, Sidi Rahal, Morocco
Description: "Pink amethyst" is the trade name these pieces are sold under, but their colour does not come from amethyst. These chunks are mostly pink to red chalcedony and agate from Tarazout in the Sidi Rahal area of Morocco's Atlas Mountains.
At Sidi Rahal, silica-filled nodules formed in cavities in Triassic volcanic rock. A study in GIA's Gems & Gemology (Fall 2013) found that the pink outer rim of these nodules is opal-CT, a poorly crystalline form of silica, and that the red to red-brown layer gets its colour from the iron oxides hematite and goethite. So the "coloured by hematite" description applies to the red rim, not to amethyst crystals.
True amethyst is quartz coloured purple by traces of iron combined with natural radiation. These pieces show little or no amethyst. Their beauty is in the layered pink and red chalcedony.
Each chunk is a half-nodule with a thick orange-red to pink rim and pink to lilac botryoidal chalcedony inside.
In crystal traditions, pink amethyst is associated with intuition and a gentle, nurturing energy.
