Description

Mined from: Morocco

Description: This one of a kind prehnite specimen has a heavy, fully covered surface of compact crystals in soft grey-green and off-white tones. The piece has a rugged, mound-like shape, and the crystal coverage is thick enough to create a sugary, textured surface over nearly the entire face. Small creamier patches break up the greyer areas, giving the specimen contrast without taking away from its overall muted, natural look. It reads as a solid cabinet piece with strong texture and dense mineral coverage rather than open, glassy crystal points.

Prehnite has an interesting place in mineral history. It was named in 1788 by Abraham Gottlieb Werner in honor of Hendrik von Prehn, who was credited with discovering it at the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa. It is widely regarded as the first mineral named after a person, which gives it a special place in the history of mineralogy. That background adds a nice layer of significance to a specimen like this, especially when paired with Morocco’s long-standing reputation for producing attractive collector minerals.
