Description

Locality: Europe (exact locality unknown)

Era: Cenozoic, Quaternary Period
Geological Age: Pleistocene, about 460,000-14,000 years ago

The woolly rhinoceros, Coelodonta antiquitatis, was a cold-adapted plant-eater that lived across northern Eurasia during the Late Pleistocene, from western Europe to northeast Siberia and south into northern China. It grazed the open cold steppe, and its teeth and skull were adapted to cropping tough grasses and sedges. People of the time knew it well, and it appears in Ice Age cave art.

Woolly rhinos disappeared from western Europe around 17,000 years ago and from eastern Europe around 15,000 years ago. The last survivors lived in the Urals or northeast Siberia until about 14,000 years ago. A 2020 ancient-DNA study led by Edana Lord and Love Dalén found that the population stayed stable long after humans arrived. It suggested that the final decline was rapid and driven mainly by the Bølling-Allerød warm period, when shrubs and trees replaced open grassland.

This one of a kind fossil tooth specimen shows heavy dark mineralization, exposed enamel folds, broken root structure, and worn chewing surfaces. The glossy black enamel and reddish-brown fossilized dentin give the piece strong contrast, while the hollowed and fractured areas show where the original tooth structure has been naturally weathered and preserved over time.

In crystal traditions, fossil teeth are often associated with endurance, survival, protection, and ancient strength. Collectors are drawn to pieces like this because they carry the raw evidence of a powerful Ice Age animal and the deep passage of time.
