Material like this comes from fossil-bearing limestone deposits in the Erfoud region, where ancient marine sediments accumulated and preserved cephalopods in large numbers. Over time, the original shell material was replaced or infilled with calcite, allowing the fossils to stand out clearly when cut and polished.
