Description: This ammonite and orthoceras oval dish from Morocco is carved and polished from fossil-rich limestone, revealing a mix of preserved marine life embedded within the stone. The surface shows contrasting fossil forms, with straight orthoceras sections cutting across the piece and curved ammonite fragments adding variation. The color ranges from dark brown to black with lighter fossil outlines, and the polished finish highlights the internal structures while keeping the overall look natural.

Material like this comes from fossil-bearing limestone deposits in the Erfoud region, where ancient marine sediments accumulated and preserved cephalopods in large numbers. Over time, the original shell material was replaced or infilled with calcite, allowing the fossils to stand out clearly when cut and polished. These dishes are shaped from slabs of that fossil-rich rock, making each one a functional piece that still clearly shows its geological origin.

People are drawn to pieces like this for their connection to deep time and the visible record of ancient marine life. Symbolically, ammonites and orthoceras are often associated with continuity, evolution, and the passage of time, with many seeing them as grounding objects that reflect long-term change and natural cycles.
