Description: Sapphire is a precious gemstone belonging to the corundum family, which is a crystalline form of aluminum oxide. It is the second hardest natural mineral, ranking 9 on the Mohs scale, just below diamond. The color of blue sapphires is caused by the presence of trace amounts of titanium (Ti) and iron (Fe), which replace some of the aluminum atoms in the crystal lattice. These titanium and iron ions absorb certain wavelengths of light in the red and yellow parts of the spectrum, while allowing the blue wavelengths to pass through or be reflected back to the observer's eye.
