描述

Mined from: Sahara Desert, North Africa

Description: Bechar 003 is a lunar feldspathic breccia discovered in 2022 in the Sahara Desert, representing material from the Moon’s ancient highland crust. This type of meteorite is composed primarily of fragmented anorthositic rock that has been broken apart and reassembled through repeated impact events. Its light coloration reflects the high abundance of calcium-rich plagioclase feldspar, distinguishing it from darker, basaltic lunar meteorites formed from volcanic activity.

As a breccia, Bechar 003 preserves a complex history of impacts on the lunar surface, where older crustal material was shattered and fused together by energetic collisions. These meteorites provide direct insight into the Moon’s early geological evolution and crust formation. Ejected from the lunar surface by large impacts, pieces like this eventually traveled through space before landing in desert regions where they are more easily recovered and preserved.

Chemical Composition: Dominantly Ca-rich plagioclase feldspar (anorthite: CaAl₂Si₂O₈) with minor pyroxene ((Mg,Fe,Ca)SiO₃) and trace olivine ((Mg,Fe)₂SiO₄); includes impact melt glass and brecciated matrix material.
