This property is due to its crystal structure and the presence of both Fe²⁺ and Fe³⁺ ions in the mineral, which interact in a way that generates a magnetic field. Magnetite is also one of the most important iron ores. It has been refined by humans to produce iron for industrial applications for thousands of years. These Van Island magnetite specimens come in the form of rough chunks with one polished smooth face, letting you see the attractive gunmetal grey color and soft luster of this mineral variety.

Each piece of Vancouver Island magnetite is supplied with a small disc shaped neodymium magnet, so that you can see the magnetic properties of this mineral in action!
