Mined from: Mt. St. Helens, Washington, USA
Description: Pumice from Mt. St. Helens is a lightweight volcanic rock formed during explosive eruptions, most notably the 1980 eruption that reshaped the landscape of southwestern Washington. It is characterized by its highly porous, frothy texture, created as gas-rich magma rapidly depressurizes and cools. The trapped gas bubbles form countless vesicles, often allowing the rock to float on water. Material from Mt. St. Helens is typically light gray to off-white and can range from fine to coarse in texture depending on how quickly the lava cooled.
This pumice forms from silica-rich magma that erupts violently, fragmenting into airborne material known as tephra. As the molten fragments cool mid-air or upon landing, the gas bubbles become locked into place, preserving the foam-like structure. Mt. St. Helens is one of the most studied volcanoes in the world, and its pumice deposits provide a clear example of how explosive volcanic processes can produce highly vesicular rock over large areas in a short period of time.
Pumice is often associated with release, lightness, and transformation. Its ability to float and its origin in explosive change give it a symbolic connection to letting go of weight or pressure. Many are drawn to it as a reminder of how intense events can produce something uniquely structured and unexpectedly light.
