Locality: Michigan, U.S.A.

Description: In June 2017, rockhound Erik Rintamaki went to a Lake Superior beach before dawn with a cheap UV flashlight he had bought on a whim. He found two dime-sized stones glowing orange. He called them "yooperlites", after "Yoopers", the nickname for people from Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

In 2018, researchers including Michigan Tech's analytical lab confirmed that the glow comes from fluorescent sodalite grains in syenite, a feldspar-rich igneous rock. Sodalite had never been reported from Michigan before.

The rocks probably did not start out in Michigan. Geologists think they came from the Coldwell Alkaline Complex on the Ontario side of Lake Superior. Ice-age glaciers carried them south, and the lake's waves rounded and tumbled them on the beaches.

Under normal light these are grey speckled stones. Under UV light the sodalite glows orange to yellow like embers.

In crystal traditions, yooperlite is associated with intuition and clear communication.
