Description

Locality: Pakistan

Description: Caribbean Calcite is a trade name for a banded stone from the Pakistan/Afghanistan border made of blue calcite and white to tan aragonite, both forms of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃). Despite the name it isn't from the Caribbean; its soft blues are simply reminiscent of the Caribbean Sea.  Copper is the primary impurity responsible for the blue color of Caribbean calcite. Copper ions within the crystal lattice can absorb light in the orange and red regions of the spectrum, leading to the characteristic blue coloration.
