Description

Locality: Rubtsovsk Mine, Rubtsovsky District, Altai Krai, Russia

Cuprite is copper oxide, Cu2O, common in the oxidized parts of many copper deposits, with native copper, malachite and azurite. Its colour runs from cochineal-red and ruby-red to nearly black, with a shining brownish-red streak and an adamantine to submetallic lustre. It is heavy, with a density of about 6.1.

This one of a kind Cuprite mineral specimen from Russia features a striking cluster of dark red to nearly black Cuprite crystals with a strong metallic to sub-adamantine lustre. The specimen shows chunky, sharply formed crystals with blocky cubic and modified octahedral faces, creating a bold sculptural appearance. Across the surface, the glossy crystal faces catch the light beautifully, while scattered rusty orange oxidation adds contrast and emphasizes the rich copper-bearing character of the piece.

Cuprite is a copper oxide mineral and an important secondary ore of copper, known for its deep crimson to blackish-red colour and brilliant lustre. It has been prized by collectors for centuries because fine Cuprite crystals can form in highly geometric habits that are both dramatic and elegant. Russian Cuprite specimens are associated with copper-rich mineral districts and oxidation zones.

In crystal traditions, cuprite is associated with grounding, strength and the root chakra.
