Description: This carved malacholla skull from the Congo combines deep green malachite with vivid blue-green chrysocolla, creating strong contrast and flowing, layered patterns across the surface. The polish brings out the natural banding and transitions between minerals, with darker green zones wrapping through brighter, more turquoise areas. The carving is clean and well-shaped, with defined features that highlight both the structure of the skull and the natural complexity of the material.

Malacholla forms in the oxidation zones of copper deposits, where multiple secondary copper minerals develop together as primary ores break down. In the Kolwezi region, chemical conditions allow malachite (Cu₂CO₃(OH)₂) and chrysocolla (hydrated copper silicate) to form side by side, often blending within the same mass. This results in the mixed material commonly referred to as “malacholla.” The Congo Copperbelt is one of the world’s most significant sources of these minerals, producing specimens with strong color saturation and intricate internal patterns.
