Description: This one-of-a-kind black opal is a 2.67 carat freeform cabochon, a smooth, domed stone with an irregular rounded outline. Flashes of electric blue and violet play of colour glow against its dark body tone, the feature that defines black opal. It comes from Lightning Ridge, New South Wales, the field most famous for black opal. It is a solid opal, not a doublet or triplet, and it is natural and untreated.

Opal is a hydrated form of silica that forms when silica-rich water settles into cracks and cavities and slowly hardens. Precious opal shows play of colour, flashes of spectral colour produced as light diffracts through tiny, regularly stacked silica spheres. Opal is softer than quartz and holds some water, so it should be protected from knocks, sudden temperature changes and harsh chemicals.

In crystal traditions, opal is often associated with creativity, emotional expression and inspiration. These associations come from spiritual and folk traditions rather than scientifically established properties.
