Locality: India
Description: These tumbled ruby specimens display deep red to dark burgundy coloration with an opaque appearance and a smooth polished finish. Unlike transparent gem-grade ruby, these stones contain abundant natural inclusions and mineral veining that create a more earthy, rugged aesthetic. Their hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale makes ruby one of the most durable natural minerals, allowing even lower-grade material to take an attractive polish during tumbling. Opaque ruby often exhibits subtle flashes of crimson or maroon under direct light and may contain patches of black matrix or feldspar host rock.
Ruby has been treasured for thousands of years. Historic rubies were mined in regions of Asia such as Burma (Myanmar) and India. Today, opaque ruby material used for tumbling and decorative purposes commonly comes from deposits in Africa and India, where corundum-bearing metamorphic rock produces darker, heavily included material unsuitable for faceting but well suited to polished mineral specimens.
